Other Characteristics: Scandium metal is a soft metallic transition metal, it has a silvery-white appearance in its elemental form which oxidizes to yellow or pinkish when exposed to air. Scandium metal can react with water to produce hydrogen gas and dissolve in many acids.


Producing Methods:

Refined scandium metal is made from heating scandium fluoride (ScF3) with calcium metal. The reaction formula: 2ScF3+3Ca=3CaF2+2Sc. Refined scandium metal can be made into customized shape, like lumps pieces, ingot or other forms. Normally refined scandium cannot be directly used on end product. It need to get further process to remove impurities, especailly calcium. During the refining process, most calcium impurity will be removed from scandium metal.


Application:

Refined scandium shares the same properties with other level scandium metal. It is lightweight, but the melting point is much higher than aluminum. It could replace aluminum to make various aircraft. It is a raw material for high-melting alloy, for example Al-Sc alloy, Mg-Sc alloy, Sc-Ti alloy. It can apply to a space shuttle, rocket, and other high-end purposes. Except these, scandium is additive for steel, tungsten, and chromium alloy. The main application by volume is aluminum-scandium alloys for the aerospace industry and sports equipment, including sports (bikes, baseball bats, etc.) that rely on high-performance materials. It has been shown to reduce solidification cracking during the welding of high strength aluminum alloys. Scandium plays a vital role in the third-generation Illuminant that is a scandium sodium lamp. It is a kind of metal halide lamp that fills with sodium iodide and scandium iodide and, simultaneously, scandium and sodium foil in the lights. Scandium is used in household equipment such as color televisions, fluorescent lights, energy-saving lights, and glasses. Scandium metal is the best barrier metal in metal-insulator-semiconductor silicon photocell and solar cells. A growing application of scandium is on electric devicves. When doping AlN with Scandium (Sc) , it can significantly improve piezoelectric performance on 5G RF chips. Other uses of scandium is also developing such as fingerprint sensor, high SNR microphone,etc.

How did Lars Nilson discover scandium?

He applied heat to the nitrate and found that his sample contained small quantities of an unknown element with a low atomic weight. Spectral analysis showed 30 unique spectral lines, proving the existence of the new element. Nilson named the element scandium after the Latin word "Scanda"which stood for "Scandinavia".
